Malawi’s opposition parties form alliance

Malawi Congress Party MCP president Dr Lazarus Chakwera has asked Malawians to fight for fresh elections after president professor Peter Mutharika withheld assenting to electoral reforms bills.

Dr Chakwera has said this during the signing of MCP/UTM alliance at Kamuzu institute for sports in Lilongwe.

Chakwera said Mutharika’s refusal to sign the bills and the hiring of international lawyers by Malawi Electoral Commission will not bar the elections.

“This country is for Malawians therefore you should fight hard for the elections to be conducted,” Chakwera said

He applauded MCP vice president Sidik Mia for accepting to leave the position of running mate

Chakwera advised people in the country to be careful and follow medical advice in order to prevent the deadly Corona virus

In his remarks UTM president Dr Saulos Chilima said they have formed the alliance to win the elections in order to serve Malawians.

Chilima asked supporters to leave behind their past disagreements for the MCP UTM alliance to prosper.

“Nobody will rig the elections hence urging Malawians to register and vote,” Chilima says

Leaders of various opposition political parties that formed coalition with MCP were in attendance.

Before the ceremony supporters of opposition political parties marched to Kamuzu institute of sports

This is the second alliance after the formulation of DPP-UDF alliance ahead of fresh presidential elections.

The parties form the alliances after parliament passed the 50 plus 1 electoral system following the recommendation of constitutional court which nullified presidential elections.
