MISA Malawi Condemns Assault Of Journalist

Media Institute for Southern Africa MISA Malawi has condemned the assault of a Malawi Electoral Commission journalist George Banda by UTM supporters during their presentation of nomination papers at Comesa hall in Blantyre.

In a statement MISA Malawi chairperson Tereza Ndanga said assaulting a journalist in line of duty is barbaric and unconstitutional therefore must not be tolerated.

Ndanga has therefore appealed to all political parties to ensure that those responsible for violence are disciplined for their actions.

UTM president Dr Saulos Chilima also condemned the assault and apologized to MISA Malawi.

Speaking to the press chairperson of Malawi Electoral Commission Justice Dr Justice Ansah also criticized the tendency.

Political violence escalates in Malawi as the country prepares for the 21 May 2019 tripartite elections.

Recently some supporters of UTM party were beaten up in Mulanje and Mangochi districts.
