School Heads Threatened

Constituency Returning Officer (CRO) for Dyanyama Zone in Mulanje North Constituency Jane Saidi is living in fear following a letter she received demanding her, other heads and deputy heads of different schools to leave their respective schools within 3 days or face unspecified action.

The letter dated 29th May, 2019 and signed by Robert William (Secretary), D. Mbendera (Constituency Governor and W. Gwinya (Youth Governor) was also served to head teacher of Kamwendo school, head and deputy for Nakamba, deputy for Sanjale, head and deputy for Chitimbe and head and deputy for Chilera schools.

According to Saidi, the issue started on the polling day when one of the candidates Gibert Khonyongwa (Independent) was seen with deputy head for Sanjale School.

“People thought that the deputy head was conniving with the candidate but the truth of the matter was that Khonyongwa was at the end of a long queue and they decided to bring him to the front so that he voted and disappeared from the centre,” Saidi explained

She further explains that barely three days after the polling day, deputy head James Maluwa had his house vandalized by the same people who authored the letters.
