Attorney general apologises to media

Attorney general has apologized for the detention and confiscation of electronic gadgets of platform for investigative journalism director, Gregory Gondwe.

This has been disclosed by MISA Malawi following an engagement with the attorney general Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda at capital hill in Lilongwe on Wednesday.

In a statement signed by MISA Malawi chairperson Teresa Ndanga and its national director Aubrey Chikungwa, Nyirenda has made a commitment to repeal or review some archaic laws that restrict media freedom, freedom of expression and violate right to privacy.

Ndanga and Chikungwa cite the sedition laws and sections of protected flag, Emblems and Names Act which are used to punish government critics and are inconsistent with Constitution of Malawi that guarantees freedoms.

“It is unfortunate that the country is retrogressing instead of defending and building the promising democracy,” they said

Gondwe was arrested on 5th February over a story about the attorney general’s decision on government’s contracts with business man Zuneth Satar.
