Child rights campaigner asks government, stakeholders to end challenges facing children

Child rights campaigner has asked government and stakeholders to put in more effort towards ending challenges facing children in the country.

Speaking on the sidelines of International Day of African Child, Desmond Mhango said the country’s strides towards ending problems children face are being overridden by continued problems.

Mhango says this day should remind Malawians that though the nation has made strides such as child rights protection act establishment of national children’s commission, it needs to do more

However, Mhango said violence against children, child labor, child marriages, few social welfare officers, violation of child rights and inadequate funding are hindering the fight against problems children are facing.

In her remarks, minister of gender, community development and social welfare, Patricia Kaliati, has called upon all child rights protection agencies to work hand in hand with government towards ending child rights abuses.

The minister asked members of parliament to help her ministry in lobbying for more funds and judiciary to help in fast trucking the cases and metering out stiffer punishments to the offenders.

This year’s theme for Day of the African Child is “30 years after the adoption of the Charter: accelerate implementation of Agenda 2040 for an Africa fit for children”.
