Court Bans Shutdown of Airports & Borders.

High court has granted injunction to Malawi Revenue Authority MRA, Airport Development Limited ADL and National Oil Company of Malawi NOCMA against shutdown of airports and borders organized by Human Rights Defenders Coalition HRDC and march for peace by Joint Civil Society Platform on Governance.

Judge Jack Nriva has ruled afternoon of on Friday 23 August 2019 after reserving the judgment on Thursday August 22 the same year.

Nriva heard arguments from lawyers of MRA who said “we are not against demonstrations but holding them in our places and HRDC stated that “holding the protests is a constitutional rights,” the judge heard

HRDC announced that the shutdown would take place from August 26 to 30 2019 in all borders and airports across Malawi.

They organised the closure to force chairperson of Malawi Electoral Commission Justice Dr Jane Ansah to resign after different types of demonstrations failed to compel her to quit the position.

HRDC organised 1 million march in the three cities of Lilongwe, Blantyre and Mzuzu which ended up being violent.

Meanwhile, HRDC has postponed the demonstrations to Wednesday until Friday.

Joint Civil Society Platform on Governance withdrew the nation wide march for peace.
