FEDOMA asks government to change title of presidential adviser on albinism and disability
Federation of Disability Organizations in Malawi FEDOMA has asked government to change the title of adviser to president on albinism and disability to presidential adviser responsible for persons with disability.
In a statement the executive directors of various organizations that are in FEDOMA say albinism is a disability therefore highlighting it above all other disabilities will have serious consequences on disability Movement.
In an interview FEDOMA acting executive director, Symon Munde, said lack of consultation is the main reason behind that mistake
“Separation of albinism from mainstream disability has also been repeated several times in public addresses,” said Munde
He said that position by government puts the disability fraternity in an awkward position as to how it can convince the general public on the inclusion of persons with albinism among other groups of people with disability
Munde bemoaned under funding of disability programs in covid 19 pandemic.
He has recommended that government engages them in consultations in all its plans
The FEDOMA director is disappointed with element of impairment aspect which has been included in the abortion bill which gives a woman a right to remove pregnancy when it has been discovered that the expected baby has some elements of impairment.
Munde called for increment of budget of disability Trust Fund to 1 billion Kwacha and put mechanisms in every district to enable every deserving person with disability to access it.
