Female activists discuss Beijing+25 & 2020 SADC gender barometer in Malawi

Former president Dr Joyce Banda has asked women to support each other to be successful.

Banda made the remarks during national level Beijing+25 consultation and 2020 SADC gender barometer launch in Lilongwe.

She said a lot of women are jealousy of each other’s success and do not help fellow women when they need help which is bad.

The former president added that if women support each other wholeheartedly, many will be successful hence developing the country in the process.

“Malawi and Africa in general has done a great job in making sure that there is no discrimination in positions as women are being given the posts they deserve,” Banda

She added that more needs to be done to end gender based violence as the cases are on the rise

In his remarks, resident representative of UNDP Malawi, Shigeki Komatsubala, congratulated Malawi for its passion on women empowerment programs.

He said UN will continue working with the country to ensure rights of women and girls are protected.

Speaking at the same function Executive Director for Malawi Human rights resource center (MHRRC) Emma Kaliya, said Malawi has gained a lot through the beijing platform by empowering women among others.

She proposed formulating tough laws to put to an end gender based violence
