Go and Correct the Distorted History of Islam – MAM

Muslim scholars have been challenged to take a leading role in correcting the distorted history of Islam in Malawi.

Chairperson for the board of trustees for Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM), Sheikh Alie Kennedy made the call when he officially opened this year’s Union of Muslim Scholars in Malawi, annual conference in Blantyre.

Sheikh Kennedy said it is very unfortunate that ill minded people deliberately distorted the history of Islam by associating the religion with evil acts like slavery.

“Time has come for the Muslim scholars to do thorough research and come up with the true and authentic history of Islam”, Sheikh Kennedy added.

He however expressed concern over poor record keeping, which he said is a major factor which has contributed to the situation.

Speaking earlier, the Chairperson for Majilis Ulamah Council of Malawi, Sheikh Mussa Matola, said the conference create a platform where Muslim scholars share and discuss issues affecting Muslims in the country.

Sheikh Matola however called upon the delegates to participate fully and share the information to the rural masses.

In his remarks, Secretary General for the Union of Muslim Scholars in Malawi, Sheikh Dr Salmin Omar Idrussi, said apart from discussing a number of issues affecting the Muslims, the conference also strengthens unity among the scholars.

Sheikh Dr Idrussi added that they make follow ups after each conference to ensure that such meetings are achieving the intended purposes.

The conference was conducted under the theme The History of Islam in Africa and brought together Muslim scholars from all parts of the country.
