Immigration Department intercepts 389 illegal immigrants

Department of Immigration in the Northern Region says there is an increase in the number of illegal immigrants intercepted this year compared to last year.

According to Francis Chitambuli, spokesperson for the department in the region, from January to May, three hundred and eighty-nine illegal immigrants were intercepted, which is an increase from the three hundred and seventy-four illegal immigrants intercepted during the same time in 2021.

Chitambuli said six Malawians have been arrested for aiding and abetting illegal immigrants adding “six vehicles were also impounded in the exercise.”

Meanwhile, Chitambuli has cautioned the citizenry against aiding foreign nationals to enter the country illegally, saying the tendency is putting Malawi’s security at risk.

Recently northern region immigration department arrested UTM party official and police officer for aiding  and defiling illegal immigrant respectively

Thereafter UTM party suspended the official until the matter is conclude by the court
