Malawi to Hold Population Census in September, 2018

National Statistical office NSO has urged Malawians to fully understand and differentiate the population and housing census from the registration of Malawi Electoral Commission.

This was said by the NSO’s spokesperson Kingsley Manda when radio Islam wanted to know how prepared the office is for this year’s September census.

Manda says preparations for the census are going on well.

As there are only three months remaining to be in September a month which government through national statistical office NSO will carry out a population and housing census the office NSO says it is set for the task.

In an interview with radio Islam NSO spokesperson Kingsley Manda said the office has already done the census mapping which is demarcating the country into small units in which enumerators will be assigned.

“We are currently procuring tablets and other accessories to be used in the exercise and added that they have already received tablets from UNFPA and they are waiting for other tablets from other development partners, saying they have planned to have 25000 tablets which is equivalent to the number of workforce they are going to recruit,” Manda explained.

Manda then revealed that training for the workforce are expected to commence next month and will start with trainer of trainers.

“We will carry-out different activities in order to civic educate the masses on the exercise bearing in mind that some people may be confused with Malawi electoral commission registration which is about to commence soon,” added Manda.

NSO spokesperson said people should understand that the census aims at knowing the population and will be done door to door while the MEC registration will be done in designated places.

Government through NSO conducts the census once in every 10 years in order to know the population of its citizens.
