MEC says future of by-elections lies in the hands of govt

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) says the future of holding by-elections in seven places lies in the hands of government as it is obliged to fund the elections.

Director of Media and Public Relations for MEC Sangwani Mwafulirwa has said.

Two parliamentary by-elections will be held in Thyolo East constituencyand Blantyre North which became vacant after Professor Peter Mutharika’s won and the death of the aspiring candidate respectively.

Mwafulirwa said candidates who showed interest will be asked to compete.

He added that other people who have interest to compete for the by-elections will be allowed to submit nomination papers to the commission.

Five other places where by-elections are expecting to be done include Zgeba ward in Karonga Nyungwe, Mbalachanda ward in Mzimba central, Lifupa ward in Kasungu west, Kandeu ward in Ntcheu North East and Lisanjala ward in Machinga Likwenu.
