Over 2.6 million voters register in 3 phases
Malawi Electoral Commission MEC has said 2,686,903 voters have registered in the first three phases of voter registration.
MEC Chairperson Justice Dr Jane Ansah has disclosed during a press conference in Blantyre organized to give an update regarding the progress of voter registration for 2019 Tripartite Elections.
Speaking to reporters Ansah said this is 81 percent of the projected 3,304,492 voters for those phases.
“Of the total registered voters she says 1,424,025 are women representing 53 percent and 1,262,371 are men representing 47 percent,” Ansah said
She also says the total for three phases is also 93 percent of those that registered in 2014 which were 2,877,409 voters.
In addition, 1,507,224, representing 56.10 percent of all the new registered voters, are youths that are aged below 35.
“Out of this sum, 810,775 are females representing 53.79 percent while 696,449 are males representing 46.21 percent,” added Ansah
Kasungu so far has the lowest turnout percentage of 74 against 2018 projections while Nkhota-kota is the highest with 88 percent.
Malawi will hold tripartite elections on 21 May, 2019 where people will elect president, Members of Parliament and councillors.
