WESM Introduces Empowerment Project Around Chia Lagoon

Wildlife and Environmental Society of Malawi WESM has introduced a three year project to empower communities around Chia Lagoon in Nkhotakota

This project focuses on providing loans to the communities in order to support the protection and restoration of wildlife particularly birds

During a stakeholders workshop chairperson of WESM Board Victor Mangochi seeks to raise awareness on importance of managing natural resources at the lagoon for the benefit of all

Director of administration for Nkhotakota district council Victor Chithabwa said the project will bring significant benefits to communities surrounding Chia Lagoon

Meanwhile, Traditional Authority Kalimanjira in Nkhotakota district expressed hope that the project will conserve and restore natural resources in Chia Lagoon

Overall it is anticipated that the project will benefit over 1190 individuals residing in 9 villages around Chia Lagoon, benefit 850 families and indirectly impact 14 000 people
