Department of immigration arrests 140 immigrants

Department of immigration and citizenship services has arrested 140 immigrants for entering into the country illegally

Public relations officer for northern region immigration office Sergeant Francis Chitambuli says two Malawians who were helping the immigrants to enter the country illegally in the early hours of Friday have also been arrested

Security officers were on patrol of tracking illegal immigrants and intercepted the vehicle suspected of carrying illegal immigrants using unchartered route around Kafukule area in Mzimba

“Henceforth the suspects were found hiding inside a van belonging to Derreck Mtawira of Lilongwe coming from Karonga. The driver upon noticing that security officers were following him decided not to stop but was later arrested,” Chitambuli

During the arrest police found that the 140 illegal migrants did not have passports and did not represent themselves to immigration officers to legalise their entry

Additionally the driver Lovemore Banda 42 years old from Malindima village TA Sitolo in Machinga ahd his assistant Edward Chitsime 45 years from Tumbi village in TA Kayembe, Dowa were also arrested and the car impounded
