DPP conflict escalates
Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) members have been urged to remain united if they want to reclaim government.
The embattled DPP Vice President of Southern Region Kondwani Nankhumwa made the appeal at a rally held at Bangwe in Blantyre.
Nankhumwa told the gathering that DPP members need to reject few individuals who want to destroy the party in order to achieve their personal benefits.
“No individual in DPP has powers to expel him from the party as he was elected at the convention,”Nankhumwa said
He said it is time to rebuild the party in order to bounce into government in 2025 elections.
Commenting, analyst says infighting within DPP IS a reflection of succession issues other than the position of the leader of opposition in parliament.
Executive director for Institute for Policy Research and Social Empowerment Dr Henry Chingaipe said this a day after DPP members of the parliament elected Francis Kasaila as leader of opposition during a party caucus with president Arthur Peter Mutharika, although parliamentarians elected Nankhumwa as their leader last week.
“Leader of opposition, positions himself as the next party president as he speaks for the party on policy matters, showcasing leadership skills, and their understanding of government policy,”said Dr Chingayipe
Meanwhile, Dr Chingaipe says Nankhumwa is still leader of opposition until the speaker announces the change.
