DWT, IZF donate Assistive Devices to BSS Visually Impaired Students
Dedza Welfare Trust DWT UK in conjunction with Islamic Zakat Fund IZF has donated Assistive Devices to visually impaired students at Blantyre Secondary School BSS in a bid to support inclusive education.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, IZF bursary officer Khalid Chilima, says the students who are under their bursary have been facing learning difficulties hence the assistance.
Chilima says the two organizations are committed to promoting access to social services for children with disabilities in the country.
He thanked DWT for pumping in over 8 million kwacha used to purchase Perkins Machines, Walking Canes, Brail and Embossing Papers which the school alone cannot afford considering their huge prices.
The recipients Haroon Dickson Basamu and Ackim Soman said they were having problems especially with writing notes and suffering in silence adding that with the equipment the students hope will reach their full potential.
Basamu said they were left behind in class due to different learning challenges they were facing.
According to the 2018-2023 National Disability Mainstreaming Strategy, there are over 1.5 million people with disabilities in Malawi and about 90 percent of them live in rural areas surviving on subsistence farming
