MEJN for Child Friendly Council Budgets in Malawi

Malawi Economic Justice Network MEJN has called upon councils to use locally generated revenue for the survival and protection of children especially the poor.

Kelvin Chirwa MEJN programs manager made the remarks during a meeting with councilors from Mangochi district council and stakeholders on child responsive budgeting checklist.

“Despite that councils receive 5% of their budget from central government they have a chance of generating more funds through local revenue collection,” Chirwa said

Commenting vice chairperson for Mangochi district council Twaha Salanje said the meeting is very significant as it has empowered the council to implement projects that are beneficial to children.

Salanje said “the council is trying to make sure that the budget is child friendly but the challenge is the small budget allocation from government.”
