Muslims in Malawi Condemn politicizing Iftaar

Muslims Association of Malawi (MAM) has advised politicians in the country to desist from the bahaviours which will likely defeat the purpose of charity in Islam.

Publicity Secretary for MAM, Sheikh Dinala Chabulika made the advice amid reports that Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Vice President Sidik Mia has distributed iftar packages which has the party symbols.

Sheikh Chabulika said MAM in its advisory role will only advise politicians to engage in charitable work for sake of Allah.

“It is not acceptable in Islam to do charitable work in the expenses of politics,” said Sheikh Chabulika.

Meanwhile, Chairperson for Mangochi Muslim Movement Association, Ahmad Sitola, said it is very unfortunate that some politicians are failing to distinguish Islam and politics.

“The month of Ramadhan is one of the holiest months in which Muslims were commanded to fast and using iftar packages as campaigning tools is an insult to the religion,” Sitola said

He further asked politicians to accord Muslims in the country due respect they deserve.

commenting on the same Forum for Peace and Justice has called upon all Muslims in the country to deal with politicians who use Islam to gain their political mileage by not voting for them in the forth coming 2019 tripartite elections.

Executive Director for Forum for Peace and Justice in Mangochi Sheik Alie Makalani said “it is sad that some politicians and political parties in Malawi tend to use Muslims for their political gain.”

Sheik Makalani therefore said his organization together with Muslim leaders have planned to approach politicians and political parties to warn them against the bahaviours.
