Pupils die of school block wall collapse in Malawi

Four primary school learners have died and more than 30 injured after a school block wall fell on them at Nantchengwa primary school in the area of Sub Traditional Authority Ngwelero in Zomba district.

According to Deputy Head Teacher at the school Paul Henry Banda, the wall fell on 116 standard 3 learners who were attending lessons behind the class for learners to have access to the warmth of sun.

Banda said “after the accident, some parents took their children to Ngwelero health Centre while others were referred to Mayaka health Centre.”

Zomba Police station Officer in charge Hasten Mathankie said four learners died on spot while over 30 were referred to Zomba central hospital for treatment.

The teacher for standard 3 classes believes that the wall collapsed due to the wind which was blowing.

Meanwhile, Zomba police and District Health Office are carrying out an assessment in order to find out the actual number of affected learners.

Minister of Education Bright Msaka cheered the injured pupils at Zomba central hospital.

Msaka said government will investigate the accident and help the bereaved families.
